For a majority of those in Chennai who enjoy watching movies in theatres, Sathyam Cinemas is the go-to-place. Founded in 1974, this multiplex chain has many firsts to its credit.

Setting an example yet again for others in the industry, this establishment has announced the installation of free sanitary napkin vending machines in all their properties. The first of its kind has been installed in the women’s restroom on the ground floor of Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai.

“As a society, we’re a little late in having this important conversation, but it’s happening now. We just want to make sure that we do our bit to be there for our customers,” Bhavesh Shah, Head of Experience, SPI Cinemas, said as reported by Indulge.

This chain has a presence in almost 52 screens across the country; Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Warangal, Nellore, Puducherry, Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai. The vending machines will eventually be installed in all these locations.

While celebrities are busy posing for pictures with sanitary napkins and posting them on social media sites with the hashtag #PadmanChallenge, Sathyam cinemas has gone one step further by making this announcement and subsequently installing the vending machine.

V Ramachandran, CEO of Glo Life Care, was instrumental in developing this vending machine. He says, “Over three decades back, I came across an article in the papers, in the letters to the editor column, written by a lady traveller about how she was stranded at the Chennai airport for want of a sanitary pad to meet her unprepared and unexpected menstrual emergency. This immediately sparked in me the need to develop a vending machine for sanitary napkins,” reported the publication.

Earlier this month Sathyam cinema also launched their popcorn tubs and cases with artworks made by differently abled artists at Kai Rassi, a city-based NGO. This provides a platform for differently abled artists to display their talent.
